Apply for the 4th “Lighting the Pathway to Faculty Careers for Natives in STEM” cohort! 

In 2014, AISES was awarded a 5-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create the “Lighting the Pathway to Faculty Careers for Natives in STEM” program. The program’s goal is to increase the representation of American Indians, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiians in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty positions at universities and tribal colleges across the country. The program aims to create an intergenerational community of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and junior and senior faculty members.

This full circle of support will help guide students to successful degree completion and advancement to the next stage on the academic career path. In addition to full circle mentorship, the program strives to provide students with valuable academic and professional support, travel funding, and educational, research, fellowship, and internship opportunities.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Full time undergraduate student, graduate student, or postdoctoral scholar in a field within Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Geosciences, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, STEM Education, or Engineering at an accredited four-year college/university or two-year college. Must be enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree.
  • Interest in becoming a faculty member at a college, university, or tribal college.
  • Have a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA), with consideration being given to applicants reflecting somewhat lower GPAs but with high potential to raise the GPA above 3.0.
  • Current member of AISES.

Selection of students will seek balance with respect to a diversity of tribes, geographic areas in the United States, STEM majors, and gender. While the focus is primarily on American Indians, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians, all AISES members are eligible. The selection process will attempt to ensure that a diversity of STEM disciplines is reflected.

Scholars in the program will receive an annual participation stipend of $2,250 for two years, and two years of travel funding to attend the AISES National Conference and AISES Leadership Summit or discipline-specific professional conference. Scholars will be matched with an AISES selected faculty mentor to interact with at least monthly.  Scholars are required to participate in skill-building, professional-development in-person programming and webinars. Finally, scholars will have the opportunity to engage in an active community of Native STEM researchers.

Native Student Scholarship to IACP 2017

NIJ is accepting applications from American Indian and Alaska Native students in the STEM fields to attend IACP 2017.
​NIJ is seeking to sponsor five (5) undergraduate or graduate students, who are American Indian or Alaska Natives studying science, technology, engineering, and math, to attend the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference (IACP) conference in Philadelphia onOctober 21–24, 2017.
These students will have the opportunity to interact with criminal justice scientists and practitioners and attend panel discussions on the most urgent issues facing communities and innovative, evidence-based solutions.
As NIJ is committed to uniting STEM research and criminal justice, and advancing diverse perspectives about persistent crime problems across a broad range of demographics and disciplines, we look forward to implementing this new program.

Champions for Change (CFC) is a leadership development program designed to shine a national spotlight on Native youth like you who are leading positive change in your communities. The CFC program gives Native youth a national platform to:

  • Educate new stakeholders about the challenges and strengths of Native communities,
  • Lift up youth perspectives on the issues you find most important,
  • Celebrate your innovative ideas and hard work to tackle tough issues, and
  • Receive support and encouragement to help you grow as strong leaders and advocates.

We’re still searching for the five young leaders who will join our fifth class of Champions for Change. We need your energy, leadership, and partnership to ensure that Native youth have meaningful opportunities to impact the issues that matter the most.

Make sure your application and three recommendations are submitted by Friday, November 18 to be considered for the 2017 class of Champions for Change.

Distinguished Fellows Program

William T. Grant Foundation Invites Letters of Inquiry for Distinguished Fellows Program

The William T. Grant Foundation‘s Distinguished Fellows Program is designed to increase the supply of, demand for, and use of high-quality research in the service of improved youth outcomes. To accomplish its goals, the program gives influential mid-career researchers the opportunity to immerse themselves in practice or policy settings and gives influential practitioners and policy makers the opportunity to work in research settings.

To that end, the program encourages mid-career researchers to submit proposals that are designed to deepen their understanding of policy processes and practice settings. The program also invites policy makers and practitioners to propose projects that will enhance their capacities to recognize and use high-quality research.

Proposed fellowships must fit the Grant Foundation’s research interests. The foundation currently supports research to understand and improve the everyday settings of youth in the United States. Specifically, the foundation funds studies that enhance the understanding of how youth settings work, how they affect youth development, and how they can be improved; and when, how, and under what conditions research evidence is used in policy and practice that affect youth, and how its use can be improved.

To be eligible, applicants must be influential mid-career practitioners, policy makers, or researchers, and propose one or two tax-exempt private and governmental organizations that are willing to “house” and mentor the fellow. For the purposes of this program, a mid-career professional is defined as having eight to twenty years of cumulative experience in his/her current role as a researcher, policy maker, or practitioner.

The program generally selects between one and four fellows annually. Each will receive up to $175,000 (including direct and indirect costs) for the total duration of the fellowship. Fellowships may range from six months to two years. The foundation also may provide a small grant of up to $25,000 to the fellowship site to defray the costs associated with hosting a fellow.

Letters of Inquiry must be received no later than January 6, 2015. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit full applications.

Dance Grants

Applications Invited for National Dance Project Touring Awards

A program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, National Dance Project Touring Awards support national tours of new dance works, with up to $35,000 in funding for each artist and company. Awards are distributed as NDP Presentation Grants to United States nonprofits presenting the works and are intended to support artist fees and travel.

Touring Awards are automatically given to all NDP Production Grant recipients. In addition, up to ten works created independently from the Production Grant process will receive Touring Awards through a competitive application process each fall.

Choreographers and companies are eligible to apply. Agents, artist managers, and presenters also may apply on behalf of an artist, company, or project.

Eligible projects will be in an advanced stage of development and be ready for touring at the beginning of the NDP touring season (between June 1 and November 30 of the following year); involve presentations of dance works of genuine imagination and originality by artists of recognized skill and accomplishment; and demonstrate that at least three U.S. presenters from at least two states will present the work on tour.
