The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will host a webinar on Evaluating Arts Grant Portfolios on Oct. 17, 2017, the third in a series of webinars showcasing evaluation and performance measurement strategies in the arts. Guest speakers Renae Youngs, Director of Research and Evaluation for the Minnesota State Arts Board, and Sara Nash, Program Director (Dance) for the New England Foundation for the Arts, present two distinct approaches to grant portfolio evaluation and also discuss the unique challenges to conducting this work in the arts. A Q&A session will follow the guest-speaker presentations. This webinar is appropriate for state arts agency and regional arts organization leaders and for researchers and evaluators working with state arts agencies and regional arts organizations.

Outreach Grant for Native American and Indigenous Presenters

The Association for the Study of Women and Mythology posted the following.

We are pleased to announce that ASWM has received a special outreach grant for our 2018 conference. This will fund participation by Native American and indigenous scholars and researchers. Proposals will be read by an outside panel of scholars, and applicants may be asked to provide certification of their tribal membership. ASWM will consider successful grant projects and articles for inclusion in our forthcoming Proceedings series.

Our external grants committee invites Native American and indigenous scholars, researchers, artists, and activists to submit critical, creative, and practitioner proposals on topics that address the identity and empowerment of Native American and indigenous women, girls, families, and the environment through women-centered mythologies, earth centered mythologies, story-telling, healing practices, inter-generational exchanges, and traditional knowledge and practices.  We encourage work whose objective is to empower both women and the earth to alleviate violence and suffering in both women and the environment. We invite proposals that demonstrate the application of traditional knowledge and wisdom practices in rectifying social justice issues pertaining to women and the environment.

American Association of University Women Accepting Applications for Community Action Grants

The American Association of University Women strives to promote equity and education for women and girls. Since the organization’s founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.

AAUW is accepting applications for its Community Action Grants Program, an annual program that provides funds to individuals, AAUW branches, and AAUW state organizations as well as local community-based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs and non-degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls.

The program offers one-year grants of up to $7,000 to support community-based projects and two-year grants of up to $10,000 to provide start-up funds for new projects that address the particular needs of the community and develop girls’ sense of efficacy through leadership or advocacy opportunities. Project topic areas are unrestricted but should include a clearly defined activity that promotes education and equity for women and girls. Special consideration will be given to projects focused on the achievements of K-12 girls and community college women in science, technology, engineering, or math.

To be eligible, individual applicants must be women who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Nonprofit organizations must be based in the U.S., and grant projects must have direct public impact, be nonpartisan, and take place within the U.S. or its territories.

Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on behalf of the Ford Foundation.

Eligibility to apply for a Ford fellowship is limited to:

  • All U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation,
  • Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations), and
  • Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level.

Kellogg Foundation Awards $24 Million to Fight Racism

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) initiative to fight racism  recently announced $24 million in grants to 14 organizations in communities throughout the U.S. While this is not the first time Kellogg has forayed into the subject of race, when it started the design phase of its current initiative in January of last year, the election of Donald Trump to the presidency still seemed far-fetched to many. Now we are fighting (or, in some cases, cheering) a government-sanctioned travel ban based on religion, demonization of immigrants, and an increase in white-supremacist hate crimes.

Synopsis of ITEST Program:
As the nation continues to expand the horizon of opportunities and possibilities through advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), the need for a more diverse and well-prepared STEM workforce is also expanding1. The challenge of preparing citizens for the expanding workforce and the changing workplace environments calls for new innovations in STEM education2. ITEST is a research and development program that supports projects to promote PreK-12 student interests and capacities to participate in the STEM and information and communications technology (ICT) workforce of the future. The ITEST program supports research on the design, development, implementation, and selective spread of innovative strategies for engaging students in technology-rich experiences that: (1) increase student awareness of STEM occupations; (2) motivate students to pursue appropriate education pathways to STEM occupations; or (3) develop disciplinary-based knowledge and practices, or promote critical thinking, reasoning skills, or communication skills needed for entering STEM workforce sectors.

Training Grant Opportunity for Small Business & Construction Trades

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) – Office of Skills Development (OSD) will be releasing Grant Program Announcements (GPAs) under Governor Walker’s Wisconsin Fast Forward(WFF) initiative for both Small Business Occupations and Construction Trades and Related Occupations.

Wisconsin employers and workforce partners are encouraged to start preparing innovative and collaborative customized training grant applications. Grantees may be awarded up to $400,000 to upskill construction trades and related occupations and up to $50,000 to upskill workers in small business settings.

Governor Walker’s WFF program was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support from lawmakers in 2013 to address the skills gap through grants to employers for customized skills training to fill current job openings and ongoing skill requirements. DWD has awarded over $18 million in WFF grant contracts to date, supporting nearly 200 worker training projects that are benefitting hundreds of businesses and thousands of trainees across the state.
